Description

In this raw and compelling memoir, Kelsi Sheren delivers a first-hand female veteran's experience as a five-foot tall, 18-year-old artillery gunner going into battle, coming out a broken soldier, and rediscovering a new purpose in life.

Step deep inside the sights and sounds of war and the devastating effects of PTSD as you follow Sheren's personal journey through basic training, fighting in Afghanistan, an operational brain injury, and a medical dismissal. Brass & Unity opens up a unique insight to the insidious voice of PTSD and the battlefield it creates in Sheren's mind. The voice grows louder when she readjusts to civilian life, where Sheren's injury is invisible to most people, clawing at her very essence as she becomes a wife, mother, and business owner.

Determined to make a difference, when Sheren finds peace in art therapy, she starts creating jewelry based on recast bullet shells, all with the goal of donating proceeds to help other struggling Veterans and first responders. Her mission to change the world by healing the people who help to defend all of our freedom becomes her new light.

This intimate view of what a soldier goes through before, during, and after deployment, also details the strength and resiliency of the mind. Sheren's moving and inspirational narrative captures the harsh realities of war, and is an original and fresh perspective about coping with trauma and creating a stronger version of yourself in the face of adversity.

Sheren is donating a percentage of her royalties from this book to veteran charities.

About the author

Kelsi Sheren is a combat veteran and artillery gunner in the Canadian military who served in Afghanistan in 2009 with the Canadian, American, and British armed forces. She was a competitive Tae Kwon Do champion from the ages of four to nineteen and holds a second-degree black belt.

Twenty percent of net profits go toward helping veterans who are suffering from PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Excerpt: Brass & Unity: A Story of War, PTSD and the Redemptive Power of Love (by (author) Kelsi Sheren)

I step off the Chinook onto a hot, dark landing zone with three units of the Third Scot Battalion Black Watch.

My legs are numb, as if someone was sitting on them for the entire flight. The gate opens. Everyone pushes out from the hold, and I collapse on the metal lift, which is basically at the edge of safety and hell.
