Description

Beneath the Statue is an inventory of the tactics of the weak, the methods of the contained and the imprisoned, and the weapons of those who cannot fight. Each story is like its own small island on a vast sea, an isolated world where things work differently. Yet among the family dramas, political machinations, the surreal dreamscapes, and the nightmares come to life, what rises again and again is the urge to struggle on, the need to fight even when it feels impossible.

About the author

Editorial Reviews

"Jeremy Colangelo's brilliant debut is rich with the strange wonder that is life, story, culture and imagination. These stories, alive to possibility, are infused with empathy, curiosity and compassion for the hoping, imaginative, emotional and creative lives we lead. Energizing and inspiring in their vision, poetry and imagination, they pose existential and philosophical questions even as they intrigue and delight. I couldn't anticipate what was around the next corner within each tale and from story to story, couldn't guess what surprising, entertaining and beguiling leaps I would encounter. Read this book and prepare for-actually, you can't be prepared for this." ~ Gary Barwin, author of Yiddish for Pirates and winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour
