Description
A missionary's amazing Arctic experiences are contextualized with contemporary understanding.
Originally published fifty years ago, this international bestseller is filled with real life 'first contact' adventures as Raymond de Coccola, a Corsican-born missionary and explorer, observed and recorded the way of life of the Krangmalit Eskimo, from 1937 to 1949.
It is now time to take a closer look at this classic portrait of cultures in collision, as a new introduction sets de Coccola's Arctic experiences in the context of contemporary understanding of missionary work and northern development.
'A tribute to our own belated growth and awareness.' - New York Times
'A classic memoir.' - B.C. World
'A remarkably insightful view into the daily life of the Eskimo in the Canadian Arctic... de Coccola has written much more than a memoir...' - New England Review of Books
