The Anatomy of Edouard Beaupré: A Story
In this well-written debut novel the story of a real person, Métis Edouard Beaupré, who lived in the late 1800s and was known as the Willow Bunch Giant, is told by a fictional doctor studying his corpse in the 1950s. The doctor hopes to find out what caused Beaupré’s gigantism and the continued growth and thickening of his skull after death in order to treat his own disease, which is causing his skeleton to shrink. The inclusion of archival photographs of Beaupré adds to the connection with him as an actual person.Caution: Some readers might find the descriptions of dissections and medical procedures disturbing.
