About the authors

Excerpt: A Little Knock Won't Hurt Ya!: My Life As a Hockey Enforcer (by (author) Allan Globensky; with Rob Kennedy & Terry Scott)

"...[minor league] games were as much about violence and mayhem as about finesse and scoring. It wasn't unusual to see one or two bench-clearing brawls every other game. Referees were instructed not to toss too many players out of the game. Violence sold tickets: the more it occurred, the bigger the crowd at the rink. Fans lined up to see the circus, and if some of the headliners were expelled, the show wasn't as appealing. Owners didn't want to take the chance of having an enforcer make an early exit that might cause the average fan to lose interest too early in the game..."

Editorial Reviews

At the start of my hockey career in the 1960s and 1970s, it was customary for teams to have at least a couple of enforcers to protect the more talented players. Among those who accepted this ungrateful mission at great personal risk was Allan Globensky. He was among the best, if not THE best. Like me, Allan had been a member of the Montreal Junior Canadians in the then very powerful Ontario Junior League, and after that, a teammate with the Quebec Nordiques. Allan was not an elite player, but he was a role model. In sports, this is very important. – Marc Tardif
