The Loud Book

Calgary artist Renata Liwska was a 2010 Governor General’s Literary Award nominee for The Quiet Book. Her delightful illustrations continue to enchant in The Loud Book and Red Wagon (which has been nominated for the 2011 Governor General’s Literary Award). Liwska draws in pencil and colours digitally, and the result is a rich softness in her humorous and animated scenes – whether in vignettes or double-page spreads.

In The Loud Book (a sequel to The Quiet Book), American author Deborah Underwood takes us through a day of different kinds of loud – from “alarm clock loud” through “dropping your lunch tray loud” to “snoring sister loud” and finally “crickets loud.” With effective use of line and gesture and gentle warm colour, Liwska illustrates these words in scenes featuring various rabbits, bears, raccoons and a somewhat mysterious iguana – school chums, loving parents and other adults.

In writing and illustrating Red Wagon, Liwska gives us the story of Lucy who wants to play with her bright new wagon. Instead, her mother asks her to do a chore, but Lucy’s trip to the market to buy vegetables evolves into a series of adventures with her friends. Although the text is slightly flat towards the end of the story, it is more than made up for by the illustrations, which carry the reader through a maritime adventure, into the wild west, at the circus, on the railroad and even in space – with a wealth of fun details that will engross young readers.
