Description

A collection of essays and artists’ contributions that are roughly divided between concrete histories and analysis, artists’ projects, and debates. This was a companion to the 1976 Art Metropole publication of “Video by Artists”. The volume emphasizes the larger context of video whereby video critiques and references mass media and existing culture. Included is Tom Sherman, Barbara London, Stuart Marshall, Klaus vom Bruch, Judith Barry, Raymond Bellour, General Idea, Jean-Paul Fargier, Dan Graham, Helmut Friedel, Peggy Gale, Colin Campbell and Chris Dercon.

Colin Campbell is a retired teacher/librarian. He lives at the historic 108 Mile Ranch, in the heart of the Southern Cariboo region of British Columbia, surrounded by rolling hills, thousands of lakes and a wide range of recreational activities. He regularly explores, hikes, skis and bikes the routes featured in this book.

La Torontoise Peggy Gale est une auteure et conservatrice indépendante dont les écrits sur l'art contemporain, principalement la vidéo, sont devenus des références dans le milieu de l'art. Elle a publié des textes dans les ouvrages Video by Artists (1976, 1986), Mirror Machine : Video and Identity (1995) et Lectures obliques (1999), sans compter les nombreux catalogues de musées auxquels elle a collaboré et son recueil d'essais Videotexts paru en 1995. Tom Sherman is an artist and writer, who works across media (print, video, radio, performance, the web). Sherman represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1980, and has been featured in hundreds of international exhibitions and festivals, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, National Gallery of Canada, Museum of Modern Art (New York), Whitney Museum of American Art, and Documenta X. He has published extensively, including Cultural Engineering and Before and After the I-Bomb: An Artist in the Information Environment and was the founding Head of the Media Arts Section of the Canada Council in 1983. In 1997 Sherman founded Nerve Theory, a recording and performance duo with Viennese musician and composer Bernhard Loibner, and the duo has contributed to many radio venues internationally. Sherman has received the Bell Canada Award for excellence in video art, the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Art, and is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Film and Media Arts at Syracuse University.
