Excerpt: Port Lands (by (author) Tod Molloy)

"I do my best work at the end of the month. When I'm debating which bills to ignore. When I'm saving up my pocket change for lottery tickets. When I feel like that loser kid in grade school, the one who smelled like poo and soup, the one whose mother cut his hair with scissors and a bowl. Or those kids back in high school, working part-time jobs while we tore around all night in borrowed family cars. We used to order from the drive-thru just to laugh at them. We used to toss our garbage out the window. I do my best work when I think about these things. When I've run out of choices. When I'm desperate and ashamed."

Editorial Reviews

"Mickey Spillaine meets James Joyce in Molloy's Toronto-set debut." ~Publishers Weekly "Overall, the driving force is Molloy's powerful use of language. Every aspect of William's journey drips with dramatic imagery, producing a dark and claustrophobic effect amplified by the blur between what's real and what's illusory." ~Booklife
